BET Awards 2023: 5 Anthems That Solidify Kendrick Lamar’s Reign as ‘Best Male Hip-Hop Artist’

The West Coast emcee won the prestigious award during last year’s ceremony.

Kendrick Lamar's talent and undeniable impact have solidified his position as the reigning “Best Male Hip Hop Artist” at the BET Awards. Thanks to his thought-provoking lyrics and impeccable flow, the West Coast emcee has continuously pushed the boundaries of the genre, elevating hip-hop to new heights.

Throughout his esteemed career, the “Pride” rapper has captured the essence of social and cultural issues, using his music as a medium for change. From his critically acclaimed albums, such as good kid, m.A.A.d city to his 2015 project, To Pimp a Butterfly, Kendrick has become an emblem of artistic brilliance and a powerful voice for his community.

Ahead of the  BET Awards 2023 airing live on Sunday, June 25 at 8 pm ET/PT on BET, we’re checking out the hit songs we feel solidified Kendrick’s win.

  • “Humble”

In 2017, the West emcee worked alongside producers Mike Will Made It and Pluss for his record “Humble.” The effort would earn Kenrick four Grammy nominations, including “Best Rap Performance,” “Best Rap Song,” “Album”, and more, three of which he won.

  • “The Heart Part 5”

The rapper officially returned to music in the spring of 2022 with his smash record, “The Heart Part 5.” The track served as a lead-up to his highly anticipated fifth studio album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.  Much like his previous work, Kendrick addressed several ongoing issues within the Black community while also addressing several high-profile figures.

  • “Alright”

Kendrick delivered a powerful soundtrack for resilience and perseverance with the release of his 2015 single “Alright.” The track sent off a message often heard in early hip-hop music, reminding us that even in darkness, there’s light.

  • “B**ch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”

Years after gradually building a solid fan base, Kendrick made his mainstream debut with the release of “B**ch, Don’t Kill My Vibe.” The track ultimately peaked at no. 9 on Billboard’s Hot

    R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

  • “DNA”

Kendrick released his bass-heavy track “DNA” in 2017. The song is notably featured on the emcee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning album Damn.

The 2023 BET Awards premieres Sunday, June 25 at 8 pm ET/PT on BET and BET Her.
