Kevin Hart Accused Of 'Gaslighting' Lil Nas X During Interview About His Decision To Come Out As Gay

Twitter is holding the actor and comedian accountable for his words.

Kevin Hart is still in the process of repairing his relationship with the LGBTQ community after he initially refused to apologize for hateful comments he made towards the group earlier on in his career. Since then, the comedian has repeatedly stated his current stance on the matter, claiming to be newly enlightened and a changed person, though stressing he has no interest in being an ally.

Well that position became very clear on a recent episode of the HBO celebrity talk show The Shop, in which Hart appeared alongside “Old Town Road” rapper Lil Nas X. At one point, the conversation turned to his decision to come out as gay back in June — and things quickly went left.

In the minute-long clip, the 20-year-old explained that his decision to come out had to do in part with how he was raised. Before he could even answer the question that was directed to him, however, Hart interjected, "He said he was gay! So what?"

"Knowing, growing up, I'm growing up to hate [homosexuality]," he said, before Hart suddenly interrupted, again, "Why?"

"If you really from the hood, you know," the young rapper told the comic before going on to explain that he was worried the public would think he was "doing it for attention" if he came out sooner.

"If you're doing this at the top, you know it's for real," he added, highlighting the risk it took for him to share this while riding the wave of such a major hit.

  • While Lil Nas' bravery in telling his story is being applauded across social media, the reaction to Hart’s interjections have been very different. Many are accusing the actor and comedian of “gaslighting” the rapper, and others have even harsher words. See what people are saying about the awkward exchange, below:
