Wendy Williams and her supportive fans are fighting back after her bank revealed they temporarily froze her access to her accounts over fears the talk show host has lost the ability to consent to making financial decisions.
According to legal documents obtained by ET, the 57-year-old is asking a judge to order Wells Fargo to "reopen any frozen accounts or assets" and grant her "access to any and all accompanying statements." She’s also attempting to have the bank barred "from freezing any and all assets which contain funds that were removed and/or withheld" from Williams' own personal and business accounts.
The request comes after Williams filed a legal brief in court in which she claimed Wells Fargo denied access "to her financial assets for weeks without providing her or her counsel with adequate explanation or evidence to support its decision."
The initial brief and subsequent restraining order filing come in reaction to Wells Fargo initially filing a court letter, claiming it has strong reason to believe Williams "is the victim of undue influence and financial exploitation." It also claims Williams' financial advisor "recently witnessed telltale signs of exploitation, including [Williams'] own expressed apprehensions, but also upon other independent third-parties who know [Williams] well and share these concerns."
Williams has been mostly out of sight for months amid health concerns, including rumors of dementia.
Williams claims that advisor was terminated due to her "malfeasance in relation to [Williams'] accounts and [her] improper conduct in relation to their professional relationship." The bank, in its letter, says its decision to deny Williams access to her money is simply an act in what it believes is in Williams’ best interest and that it has nothing to gain from it.
All of this comes as a new Twitter movement began brewing on Thursday (February 10) in support of Wendy Williams and her ongoing behind-the-scenes fight to regain control over her finances. Inspired by the #FreeBritney campaign to support Britney Spears’ former conservatorship agreement, #UnfreezeWendy trended on the social media platform. See what some are saying below.
